Save Our Belper Mills

Planning permission secured

A little over four years after the formation of Our Belper Mills and with a stated objective to work together at local, national and international level to restore and put to viable use, the Belper Mills site(s) to a world-wide recognised standard ” the Mills have finally secured planning permission.

Our Belper Mills exists to represent the public voice in the process to restore the historic UNESCO world heritage recognised North and East Mills in Belper

Weather, time and a lack of action over many years has left the Belper Mills complex in need of some serious attention… and soon. A long-standing planning application to convert part of the site remains under consideration and whilst that drags on, so does the damage.

And why is the site so important? Well besides being ‘the’ iconic landmark in the heart of Belper, it also holds claim to being the first iron-framed building in the world, and, along with Kedleston Hall, is the only other Grade I listed building in Amber Valley (excluding churches).

Not only that, but it’s an opportunity. A golden opportunity to provide accommodation, facilities for the town, jobs and goodness knows what else besides.

That’s why Our Belper Mills has been formed. We exist to support and encourage the creation of a viable planning application that considers the views of the community; local residents, local businesses. It’s time these beautiful landmark buildings are restored in a way that makes the town proud for decades to come.
